Neuropathy Q&A

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a nerve disorder that involves your peripheral nervous system. This “system” contains the countless tiny nerves responsible for sending and receiving information to and from your brain and spinal cord.

The sensory division of your peripheral nerves tells your brain what your body is seeing, tasting, feeling, or sensing at any given moment. The motor nerves relay your brain’s instructions about how to react to the sensory input. This gives you the ability to move your hand away from an open flame that’s causing discomfort.

The autonomic peripheral nerves in your body control functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, and digestive processes. When you have peripheral neuropathy, your peripheral nervous system isn’t functioning normally.

What are the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy?

Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy often involve the legs and arms and might include:

  • Numbness, prickling or tingling in your feet or hands
  • Sharp, throbbing, freezing or burning pain that may feel like an electrical shock
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch or decreased sensation in an area
  • Muscle weakness and wasting in your extremities when motor nerves are affected
  • Loss of balance and decreased coordination

Peripheral neuropathy can involve as few as one or two nerves. Most often, however, peripheral neuropathy affects multiple nerves (polyneuropathy) in different locations. The symptoms are minimal at first but build in severity over time.

What causes peripheral neuropathy?

Rather than a single disease, peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage that’s caused by a variety of issues, including:

  • Diabetes, kidney dysfunction, and liver disease
  • Poor dietary choices that lead to vitamin deficiencies
  • Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Certain medications
  • Trauma or pressure on the nerves caused by injury, improper posture, or spinal changes

Diabetes is the most common link to peripheral neuropathy, affecting about half of everyone diagnosed with this nerve disorder.
